Historical beginnings

Way back in the second half of the 19th century, many of the consumer goods made by individual craftsmen and women in the United kingdom came to be concentrated in factories across the country. One of the very first companies that pioneered the mass-production of clothing in England was Hyam Hyam, who originally began trading in the town as Pawnbrokers and Clothes Dealers. In 1867 Hyam Hyam constructed the buildings known today as Abbeygate 1 & 2, one of the very first factories in Britain for the mass production of men's clothing, employing hundreds of people utilising the latest technology known at the time, revolutionising the clothing industry.
